A motorcyclist has been jailed after a dangerous manoeuvre resulted in a fellow motorcyclist having to have their leg amputated, a court has heard.

Kathryn Goff, 52, of Milton Road in Exeter, appeared at Exeter Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving in "darkening, wet and foggy conditions".

Goff was sentenced to 20 months in prison and disqualified from holding a licence for four years, police said.

Alan Kennedy, from the Serious Collisions Investigation Team at Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "We hope this case will serve as a reminder that every manoeuvre can have tragic consequences."

'Totally avoidable collision'

Devon and Cornwall Police said Goff was travelling along the A3052 Sidford to Colyton road on 9 March 2023 when the she overtook an RAC van.

It said the manoeuvre took her motorcycle on to the opposing carriageway and into the path of an oncoming Honda motorcycle.

Both motorcycles were "extensively damaged" in the crash and the RAC van suffered bodywork damage to a door.

Mr Kennedy said Goff's actions had "changed the life of another motorcycle rider".

"This was a totally avoidable collision.

"Goff's riding fell far below the standard expected of a road user and the decision to perform the overtake was made even worse by the poor weather conditions at the time."
