When selecting an LED display, you may come across markings like IP65 or IP67. What is the IP rating? These codes refer to the Ingress Protection (IP) rating, an international standard that indicates the LED display’s resistance to dust and water.
The IP rating consists of two digits. The first digit (ranging from 0 to 6) represents the level of protection against solid particles such as dust. A rating of 6 means the LED screen is completely dust-tight, while 5 indicates that some dust may enter but does not interfere with operation. The second digit (ranging from 0 to 9) refers to the water resistance of the LED display cabinet. A rating of 0 offers no protection, while 9 indicates the ability to withstand high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. For example, an IP67 LED display is fully protected against dust and can tolerate temporary immersion in water without damage.
Different applications require different levels of protection. Indoor LED displays typically require only basic protection, such as IP20, which is sufficient for clean, controlled environments. Outdoor LED displays, however, are exposed to rain, humidity, and airborne particles, and generally require a minimum rating of IP65 to ensure long-term reliability. In more extreme conditions—such as industrial, automotive, or marine environments—higher ratings like IP67 or IP68 are preferred.
