A Scarborough pub is set to shut despite a community campaign to save it from closure.

Customers at the The Cask Inn, in Cambridge Terrace, had hoped to take over the running of the venue after it was put up for sale for £350,000.

However, in a statement posted on Facebook, a pub spokesperson said it would close on 18 May.

They said the venue was due to be taken over by new owners EMCE LTD Building Services Scarborough.

Open since the 1970s the venue had been home to the Scarborough Jazz Club for more than 17 years.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the community ownership campaign had received support from the Plunkett Foundation, which supports "people in rural areas to set up and run successful businesses in community ownership".

A bid had also been prepared for the Government's Community Ownership Fund.

"As you can imagine, given the efforts of ourselves and our team as well as our amazing community, this is a sad day," a statement from the pub said.

"We had hoped to be coming back as tenants, but unfortunately our plans to continue building a community pub celebrating local music does not sit with plans for the building."

Andrea Allison, who co-runs the Cask Inn, said she had now taken on The Spa Pub, in Victoria Road, and was planning to "continue to build our community there".

She said her new venture would also act as the new home of the Scarborough Jazz Club.
